Communication is the method where by people share ideas, information, opinions and feelings. People sharing ideas, information, opinions and feelings may contribute to the operation of teams and works as an individual.

In an organization, work efficiency comes with good communication between the employer and the employee, in order for effectively communication to take place, one needs to ensure information is communicated in an accurate and non-bias way.

Timeliness is critical. Small companies have the advantage of sharing free flow of information in an informal network but the natural of informal network is information leading to rumors fed by grapevine. This grapevine can ruin a thriving business when changes is approaching or uncertainty is at it's highest. Once you made the decision, share the information timely and document the content of your decision. This lessen the power of grapevine and give managers credibility. The cost of not communicating in a timely way is anger, dissatisfaction and loss of trust.

Communicate continuously. The free flow of information can help manage business in many ways. When the employees are aware of the pressure and concerns facing their employers, this free flow of information is shared, employees can bond to form a more united front. If communication is not continuous, employees will fall back on less reliable sources of information. Be able to anticipate changes will make one less dramatic when change actually takes place.

Nine Ways to Network More Effectively

No matter what business you are in, you also have a second job…you are a marketer. That means you are responsible for letting others know about how you can help them. One of the best ways to get those opportunities to convert prospects into customers is by networking. Here are some simple strategies for making your networking more effective.

1) Don’t describe what YOU do.

Let your potential client know how you can positively impact his or her life. Explain how your product or service will improve the life of your potential client.

For example, when someone asks me, “What do you do?” my first thought is almost always to explain, “I’m a writer and consultant.” Unfortunately that response rarely piques the interest of potential clients. Instead I’ve learned to answer, “I POWERFULLY communicate business messages to get results.” This answer not only grabs their attention but stimulates more questions about how I might help that particular prospect.

Action item: Develop your value response to the question, “What do you do?”

2) Turn interest into appointments.

Once you have developed your value response to the action item above, you are well on your way to more effective networking. When you describe what you can do for a potential client they are more likely to be interested in what you do. After all, it’s all about WIIFM – What’s In It For Me!

My friend Ray is a dynamic individual. Coincidentally he runs Interlink a faith based organization. I recently overheard someone ask Ray what he does. Ray quickly replied “I help seniors and others stay in their homes as long as possible.” The person asking the question was immediately touched and wanted to know more. By providing just enough information to increase curiosity, Ray quickly gained interest and a new volunteer for his organization. Ray also learned of a senior in need through this interaction.

You can follow this same strategy. Always provide information that is of value even if the prospect doesn’t schedule an appointment or need your services right now. The idea is to partner with customers to help them - not to trick them into services they may not want or need.

Action items: Develop a response to further inquiries about your business or service and provide valuable information to potential customers that helps turn interest into appointments.

3) Give prospects more than they expect.

Sure, your time is valuable but so is the time of your potential customer. Maximize the effectiveness and value of your initial meeting by offering to meet pro bono (or for free). While I don’t advocate giving services away for free, a complimentary initial meeting is a good way to find out if your services are right for the customer…and if the customer is right for YOU.

Recently, Wade, an investment services broker contacted a marketing specialist to discuss ways he could increase his client base. The marketing specialist granted Wade a complimentary ½ hour consultation and could have suggested all kinds of advertising and marketing placements that would have cost Wade lots of money. Instead, the savvy marketing specialist detected that it would be more beneficial for Wade to build networking skills and work on individual relationships to increase business. During this complimentary meeting both parties quickly assessed that they could probably work together in the future but the timing wasn’t quite right. Wade was grateful for the honest assessment and has since begun building relationships via the local Chamber of Commerce. When he’s ready to put together a marketing campaign, Wade knows who he’ll call.

Action item: Consider offering brief complimentary consultations to evaluate if you are a good fit with a potential customer.

4) Can’t assist? Try to provide a referral source.

Let’s face it. There will be customers you cannot help because their needs don’t fall within the scope of the services you provide. It’s a given. There will also be customers you don’t want to work with (which is why the initial consultation is so important). Regardless of why you won’t be working together, provide a reference to someone else who might be able to help if you can. This simple gesture continues to position you in a place of value.

Often if I have an initial consultation and find they need services I don’t provide (or if we are simply not a good fit), I keep a list of contacts handy so I can refer them elsewhere. I try to provide at least three contacts so they have a variety of providers to choose from. Yes, I even refer to other writers and consultants. I have found this actually helps rather than hurts business. I believe there is enough business to go around.

Action item: Develop a list of referral sources you can provide as added value to customers you can’t assist.

5) Collect and share business cards.

This may seem simple but oftentimes even network savvy people forget to gather business cards. Make sure to have a supply of your own cards on hand and trade cards with contacts you meet. It’s a good idea to make specific notes for future recall on the back of the cards you collect.

For example, I recently met an investment broker. So I would remember our conversation, I discreetly made notes on the back of his business card when we were done speaking. I also noted he was an avid golfer. Now when I pull up his card, it jogs my memory about our conversation. You never know when the information might come in handy.

Action item: Make sure you have your own business cards on hand at all times. Start collecting cards when networking and noting possible projects and interests on the back of business cards. Consider creating notes in a “tickler file” if the cards are two sided leaving no room for notes. Staple your notes to the card itself.

6) Remember to follow up.

It’s the easiest yet most neglected step of networking. Many people miss out on future opportunities by simply not following up on leads.

Make it a habit to put aside time after a networking event to follow up with your new prospects. Once you get used to this step, it will become second nature. Enter their contact information in whatever filing system or software program (ACT or e-mail) you use. Now you can choose to send a quick email letting them know how much you enjoyed meeting them and/or send a handwritten note (include some additional business cards). Even if a person isn’t interested in your services right now, you want them to keep you in mind for future projects or referrals.

Action item: Take a moment to follow up with a prospect today. The time it takes to write a note and the small investment of a stamp could pay off mutually in the future.

7) Continue to follow up.

While you don’t want to inundate people with unwanted contacts, you do want to make sure potential customers know you are thinking of them. The key to continuous follow up is to be genuine.

One way to subtly follow up without being a pain is to be on the lookout for articles or information that may be of interest to the potential customer. Clip it out and mail it or e-mail to them with a brief note letting them know you’re thinking of them. About one week later, give them a quick call to make sure they received the information.

Action item: Choose one prospect and send him or her an article of interest today. Make a note to follow up with a phone call in one week. Chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the response. After all, you are providing something of value for nothing.

8) Don’t forget your friends and family.

When you’re running your own business, it’s easy to get caught up in day to day operations. It’s also easy to forget some of our best references and (possibly even clients) are our friends and family. Be sure to keep in touch and let them know what you’re trying to accomplish.
I was recently visiting a childhood friend, Karen. We’ve been friends since we were five years old. Though we keep in touch via e-mail and letters we only see each other every few years because we live in different states. Over dinner, I learned that Karen is in the initial stages of planning a new business venture. I was able to share more about my own business and we found that we’ll be able to help each other. Karen needed resources for completing a business plan as well as help with marketing ideas. While she knew that I was doing freelance writing projects, she didn’t know that marketing and advertising plans are one of my specialties.

Action item: Never assume that everyone knows and understands what you are doing. Make a list of friends and family who may not be aware of what you do professionally. Send them a personal note along with business cards to ask for their help in prospecting. They could inadvertently become your top sales people.

9) Always thank your contacts for referrals and projects.

One of the first things we’re taught as children is to say “please” and “thank you.” Oddly enough it’s one of the first things that many business people forget.

It’s easy to fall into the mindset you are providing a valuable service and doing the work itself is enough. This is simply not true. People need to feel appreciated and valued when you let them know they are appreciated and valued. Continue to build relationships even after the sale by sending thank you cards and / or gifts. A little kindness will go a long way. Also, don’t forget to thank those who have done work for you.

Action item: Recall someone you have worked with lately you haven’t thanked. Then follow up right away.

Five Major Ways Of Attaining Legal Residence In The United States

There are several ways of attaining legal residence in the United States. In this lead article, I will discuss what I consider to be the five major routes to legal residence, namely, family based visas, study visas, work visas, asylum and refugee status and the diversity visa program. In the rest of this article, I will summarize each one of them. It should be noted that within one of the categories you can have a further classification as to whether the visa is an immigrant or non-immigrant. A non-immigrant visa is one that allows an alien to be resident in the United States for a short period of time for a particular purpose. A study visa is a good example of a non-immigrant visa. On the other hand, an immigrant visa allows the recipient to be resident in the United States for the long term, for example the Diversity Visa Program.

1. Family-based immigrants

Spouse of US Citizen

If you are an American citizen you have two ways to bring your foreign spouse (husband or wife) to the United States to live. You can file an immigrant Petition for Alien Relative; Form I-130 or Nonimmigrant visa for spouse (K-3); Form I-129. It is important to note that application for the nonimmigrant visa for spouse (K-3) who married a U.S. citizen must be filed and the visa must be issued in the country where the marriage took place. After the visa process has been completed, and the visa is issued, the spouse can travel to the United States to wait for the processing of the immigrant visa case.

Fiancé of US Citizen

A fiancé is a person who is engaged or contracted to be married. The marriage must be legally possible according to laws of the state in the United States where the marriage will take place. In general, the two people must have met in person within the past two years. The Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services grants some exceptions to this requirement. For example, it may be contrary in some traditions for a man and woman to meet before marriage.

You must file the Petition for Alien Fiancé, Form I-129F, with the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office that serves the area where you live. See the Department of Homeland Security's USCIS Field Offices for information on where you can file the petition. After the USCIS approves the petition, it sends the petition to National Visa Center for processing, prior to sending it to the embassy or consulate where your fiancé will apply for a K-1 nonimmigrant visa for a fiancé.

2. Study Visas

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people come to study in the United States from all over the world. This provides diversity to the US classroom, and makes a US education so vital in broadening each student’s world view. The Immigration and Nationality Act provides two nonimmigrant visa categories for persons wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is reserved for non-immigrants wishing to pursue academic studies and/or language training programs, and the "M" visa is reserved for non-immigrants wishing to pursue nonacademic or vocational studies.

You first must apply to study at a USCIS-approved school in the United States. When you contact a school that you are interested in attending, you should be told immediately if the school accepts foreign national students. If you are accepted, the school should give you USCIS Form I-20 A-B/ID (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - for Academic and Language Students) or Form I-20 M-N/ID (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status - For Vocational Students), which you will need to apply for your student visa.

3. Work Visas

a. I-129 Non-immigrant Petition for Temporary Workers

Employers who wish to hire foreign workers to temporarily perform services or labor or to receive training may file an I-129 petition. Form I-129 is mainly used for non-immigrant categories; thus, in most cases, workers who enter the United States under this petition must depart the U.S. when their maximum period of stay has been reached. Form I-129 may also be used to petition for an extension of stay or change of status for certain non-immigrants.

There are many categories of workers who are temporary visitors and who may be petitioned for on the I-129. The most common visa for temporary workers is the H-B, which is normally valid for 3 years and is renewable for a maximum of 6 years.

b. I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker

Form I-140 is used for an immigrant visa petition, meaning the petitioner intends to relocate to the United States for the long term. This is in contrast to Form I-129 which is used for temporary workers. However, the petitioner has to meet a very high standard of excellence in their field of endeavor.

U.S. employer may file this petition for an outstanding professor or researcher, with at least three years of experience in teaching or research in the academic area, who is recognized internationally as outstanding and is a member of the profession holding an advanced degree or is claiming exceptional ability in the sciences, arts, or business, and is seeking an exemption of the requirement of a job offer in the national interest.

4. Refugees and Asylees

If you are currently in the United States and you have a risk of persecution for your political opinion or for belonging to a particular social group in your home country, you may be eligible to apply for asylum. If you currently outside the United States and face a similar danger of persecution you may be eligible to apply for protection by the United States as a refugee.

In order to qualify for asylum, you must establish that you are a refugee who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her country of nationality, or last habitual residence in the case of a person having no nationality, because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. This means that you must establish that race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion was or will be at least one central reason for your persecution or why you fear persecution. The US law that provides for the asylum benefit for persecuted aliens is 8 CFR PART 208. If you are granted asylum, you and any eligible spouse or child included in your application will be permitted to remain and work in the United States and may eventually adjust to lawful permanent resident status.

5. Diversity Visa Program

Every year, thousands of people from all over the world are given an opportunity to become US residents, in a deliberate program to promote immigration. This program reinforces the fact that the United States is a nation of immigrants and that despites security challenges in the last few years, remains open to welcome visitors and residents from foreign lands.

The Diversity Visa Program is a congressionally mandated program that makes available 50,000 to 55,000 permanent resident visas annually, drawn from random selection among all entries to persons who meet strict eligibility requirements from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. It is free to submit the application, anybody or organization that solicit a fee from you must disclose that they are charging you a fee for their services in assisting you file the application, and non of the fees charged will be forwarded to the Diversity Visa Program, because it is free.

For latest information, prospective applicants should check the Diversity Visa Program website at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov Information about the program for each particular year is normally available at the State Department website in the second half of the year, the next program will be the DV-2010 and information should be available in late 2008.

The Law of Attraction and The Weird and Wacky World of Metaphysics

Quantum science is going beyond the probe of atoms, and exploring the weird and wacky!

New words are entering science, new ideas, theories and dimensions, String Theory, Zero Point Energy Theory, and Membrane Theory to mention a few.

But the weird and wacky isn’t new to science, there has always been controversy and mystery in the science of the very little.

In ancient Greece there was a controversy about the nature of light. Euclid, Ptolemy and others thought that "light" was some sort of ray that travels from the eye to the observed object.

The atomists and Aristotle assumed the reverse. Nearly 800 years after Ptolemy, circa 965 CE, in Basra in what is now Iraq, Abu Ali al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) settled the controversy with a clever argument. He said that if you look at the Sun for a long time you will burn your eyes: this is only possible if the light is coming from the Sun to our eyes, not vice versa.

In 1672 another controversy erupted over the nature of light: Newton argued that light was some sort of a particle, so that light from the sun reaches the earth because these particles could travel through the vacuum.

Hooke and Huygens argued that light was some sort of wave. In 1801 Thomas Young put the matter to experimental test by doing a double slit experiment for light.

The result was an interference pattern. Thus, Newton must have been wrong: light had to be a wave.

The double-slit experiment contains a lot of the best aspects of the weirdness of quantum physics, for example a light shining through a small hole or slit (like in a pinhole camera) creates a spot of light on the screen (or film, or detector). However, light shown through two slits that are close together creates not two spots on the screen, but rather a series of alternating bright and dark lines with the brightest line in the exact middle of this interference pattern.

This shows that light is a wave since such a pattern results from the interference of the waves coming from each slit.

However, in the year 1900 physicist Max Planck showed that certain other effects in physics could only be explained by light being a particle. Many experiments followed to also show that light was indeed also a particle (a "photon") and Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921 for his work showing that the particle nature of light could explain the "photoelectric effect."

This was an experiment whereby low energy (red) light, when shining onto a photoelectric material, caused the material to emit low energy (slow moving) electrons, while high energy (blue) light caused the same material to emit high energy (fast moving) electrons.

However, lots of red light only ever produced more low energy electrons, never any high-energy electrons.

In other words, the energy could not be "saved up" but rather must be absorbed by the electrons in the photoelectric material individually. The conclusion was that light came in packets, little quantities, and behaved thus as a particle as well as a wave.

So light is both a particle and a wave. OK, kind of unexpected, but perhaps not totally weird.

But the double slit experiment had another trick up its sleeve. One could send one photon (or "quantum" of energy) through a single slit at a time, with a sufficiently long interval in between, and eventually a spot builds up that looks just like the one produced when a very intense (many photons) light was sent through the slit.

But then a strange thing happened. When one sends a single photon at a time (waiting between each laser pulse, for example) toward the screen when both slits are open, rather than two spots eventually building up opposite the two slit openings, what eventually builds up is the interference pattern of alternating bright and dark lines!

Hmm... how can this be, if only one photon was sent through the apparatus at a time?

The answer is that each individual photon must - in order to have produced an interference pattern -- have gone through both slits!

This, the simplest of quantum weirdness experiments, has been the basis of many of the unintuitive interpretations of quantum physics.

We can see, perhaps, how physicists might conclude, for example, that a particle of light is not a particle until it is measured at the screen. It turns out that the particle of light is rather a wave before it is measured. But it is not a wave in the ocean-wave sense.

It is not a wave of matter but rather, it turns out that it is apparently a wave of probability. That is, the elementary particles making up the trees, people, and planets -- what we see around us -- are apparently just distributions of likelihood until they are measured (that is, measured or observed).

So much for the Victorian view of solid matter!

The shock of matter being largely empty space may have been extreme enough -- if an atom were the size of a huge cathedral, then the electrons would be dust particles floating around at all distances inside the building, while the nucleus, or center of the atom, would be smaller than a sugar cube.

But with quantum physics, even this tenuous result would be superseded by the atom itself not really being anything that exists until it is measured.

One might rightly ask, then, what does it mean to measure something? And this brings us to the Uncertainly Principle first discovered by Werner Heisenberg.

Dr. Heisenberg wrote, "Some physicist would prefer to come back to the idea of an objective real world whose smallest parts exist objectively in the same sense as stones or trees exist independently of whether we observe them. This however is impossible."

If this wasn’t wierd enough, along came the absolute wacky in the shape of Entanglement!

Entanglement shows us that it is possible to link together two quantum particles – photons of light or atoms, for example – in a special way that makes them effectively two parts of the same entity.

You can then separate them as far as you like, and a change in one is instantly reflected in the other. This odd, faster than light link, is a fundamental aspect of quantum science – Erwin Schrödinger, who came up with the name “entanglement” called it “the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics.”

Entanglement is fascinating in its own right, but what makes it really special are dramatic practical applications that have become apparent in the last few years.

Is it possible that entangled particles are not actually in immediate communication, but are simply programmed to behave in the same way? Much like twins separated at birth who live eerily similar lives - assume the same professions or marry similar spouses.

If you take some property of a particle, the equivalent of color, say the spin of an electron, it doesn’t have the value pre-programmed. It has a range of probabilities as to what the answer might be, but until you actually measure it, there is no fixed value.

What happens with a pair of entangled electrons is you measure the spin of one. Until that moment, neither of them had a spin with a fixed value. But the instant you take the measurement on one, the other immediately fixes its spin (say to the opposite value).

These quantum bits were every possible color until you looked at one. Only then did it become pink, and the other instantly took on another color.

Einstein among other scientists could not accept quantum entanglement. It seems to throw out the whole notion of cause and effect, so how confident are physicists that quantum entanglement exists and what are the implications for science and the scientific method?

Einstein had problems with the whole of quantum physics – which is ironic, as it was based on his Nobel Prize winning paper on the photoelectric effect. What he didn’t like was the way quantum particles don’t have fixed values for their properties until they are observed – he couldn’t relate to a universe where probability ruled.

That’s why he famously said that God doesn’t play dice. I think an even better quote, less well known, was when he wrote: “I find the idea quite intolerable that an electron exposed to radiation should choose of its own free will, not only its moment to jump off, but also its direction.

In that case, I would rather be a cobbler, or even an employee in a gaming house, than a physicist.”

Einstein believed that underneath these probabilities were fixed, hidden realities we just couldn’t see. That was why he dreamed up the idea of entanglement in 1935.

It was to show that either quantum theory was incomplete, because it said there was no hidden information, or it was possible to instantly influence something at a distance. As that seemed incredible, he thought it showed that quantum theory was wrong.

It did take a long time to prove that entanglement truly existed.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that it was clearly demonstrated. But it has been shown without doubt that this is the case.

Entanglement exists, and is being used in very practical ways.

Entanglement doesn’t throw away the concept of cause and effect. But it does underline the fact that quantum particles really do only have a range of probabilities on the values of their properties rather than fixed values. And while it seems to contradict Einstein’s special relativity, which says nothing can travel faster than light, it’s more likely that entanglement challenges our ideas of what distance and time really mean. Similarly, entanglement is no challenge to the scientific method.

We need to use a different kind of math, but this is still the same science

In the early 1990s, in Britain, four large media groups, time warner, columbia pictures, CNN, news corporations controlled the majority of news being circulating around national daily newspaper. The transformation of media institutions into large commercial conglomerates exist only because they are able to make more profit for their large corporations and are able to circulate their media products in the international arena.

There are a group of media moguls/barons who have created corporate structures that span across the continents, combine holding in printing, broadcasting, publishing and film productions and have a diversification of business which brings in multiple profits for the corporation. An example of media mogul is Rupert Murdoch who owns News corporations and his company owns properties on four continents, which produce and distribute products in television, books, films, newspaper and magazine publishing and now even online social community like myspace which have the largest among of members is owned by him.

John Pilger in "information is power" commented that 90% of international news published by the world's press comes from the big four western news agencies. United press Internationl(UPI), Reuters, Agence France Press(AFP), Associated Press (AP). Locally you can see that the newspaper articles are being covered mainly by foreigner writers and the perspective comes from a foreigner's point of view and this is why you need to read more than just stories covered by them but also other newspaper which may have a difference view on the story.

Cross media ownership occurs if any one branch of media holds a large percentage of stake in another company, it will be in the position to control the opinions of the larger section of people in the corporation. Mediacorp holds TCS 5, suria, channel U and ChannelNewsAsia and we should never rely on just one feed source of coverage but diversify the way we look and read on different perspective of news coverage from local and foreign writers.

Feedback plays a powerful role in the media as it decides when the advertisement or programmes should be continued on the television or not. If a programme which is broadcasted stays no value or with negative comments from the society then the program might face being eliminated out of the schedule for good.

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. this week said it would offer life insurance to women with certain types of early stage breast cancer at the same rates as healthy women, reflecting increased coverage for individuals with medical conditions that would have been roadblocks to insurance several years ago.

To make such policies feasible, insurers are looking beyond mortality tables to clinical medical underwriting, which takes into account medical advances. The demand for “impaired risk insurance” is expected to increase as baby boomers age and medical advances turn once-deadly conditions into chronic illnesses.

“Most people are insurable,” said Matt McAvony, president of Target Insurance Services in Overland Park, Kan., and chair-elect of the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies. “Most people can get an offer to buy insurance.”
Hartford said its new coverage is available to women who have been treated for the first time for “small, well-differentiated, localized Stage 1 breast cancer and have a strong prognosis for survival based on the results of common tests.”

Hartford estimates that 100,000 women who were treated during the last five years for breast cancer meet the guidelines for its new insurance, representing about 15% of the women diagnosed with stage-one breast cancer.

“We see it as an affirmation of the progress made in the clinical area,” said Ann Hoven, chief medical director for the Hartford, Conn., company's Individual Life Division.
She said that Hartford routinely monitors clinical research about serious illnesses, and since 1991, deaths from breast cancer have dropped 20% because of early detection and improved treatment. After conducting its own research Hartford decided it could offer this new insurance, which would significantly decrease the cost of life insurance for a woman.

For example, a 50 year-old woman who had been treated for stage-one breast cancer previously would have had to pay $1,500 over a year plus an additional $2,500 annually for five years. Now, women who meet the new underwriting guidelines would pay only $1,545 a year.
An estimated 5% to 10% of the insurance-buying population has a medical condition that may make their insurance priced beyond standard. That number likely will grow as baby boomers age and medical advances enable patients to live long lives despite a serious medical condition.
“I'm insuring people today who had prostate cancer six years ago, people who years ago, we wouldn't have touched,” said Jack Fischer, who owns Amsterdam Financial, an independent financial-services firm in Chicago. The firm specializes in securing insurance for impaired risk cases.

“We have more knowledge, more comparisons, more statistics, more years have gone by with positive results,” said Mr. Fischer.
U.S. Financial Life Insurance Co. in Cincinnati sells only impaired risk insurance and has grown annually since it was established 15 years ago.
It provides coverage for individuals with, among other things, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. U.S. Financial takes a multipronged approached when evaluating potential policyholders and considers whether a person is living a healthy lifestyle and following a doctor's orders.

The company, a subsidiary of AXA Financial Inc., sells the policies through life-insurance agents rather than directly to the public.
“I think many people believe they can't get life insurance is because of a medical condition, and that was true years ago, but not today,” said Hartford's Ms. Hoven, who compared the new insurance with changes that occurred about a decade ago for patients with a history of heart attacks.

Mr. Fischer encouraged people with medical conditions to find agents who are knowledgeable about impaired-risk Insurance. “You really want someone who has done it and understands it before they write you up,” he said.

The Zone Diet, pioneered by Dr. Barry Sears, promises moderation and flexibility. It's not as rigid as the high-protein Atkins Diet, and claims to work by controlling insulin and reducing inflammation within the fat cells. When these fat cells become inflamed, that's when we purportedly see the weight gain. Apparently, by regulating the insulin and the hormonal balance, you can control your hunger and accordingly your weight gain. Hey - not only does it work for Jennifer, Demi and Jessica, but Brad Pitt and Cindy Crawford are believers, too. They all look pretty good to me, so something must be working!

Another popular diet is the Atkins Diet, which is similar to the Zone but more extreme. If you look at its followers, this makes sense. Super-skinny stars like Renee Zellwegger, Sarah Jessica Parker and Calista Flockhart are all big fans!

The Atkins Diet was made famous by Dr. Robert Atkins, and has four stages to it, all of which are very low-carbohydrate. The first stage of the program only allows for consumption of 20 net carbs a day! This is very difficult to follow, and you must be extremely focused and dedicated to the weight loss to get through the first two weeks of this program. Even after the first two weeks, Atkins followers are only “allowed” to increase their carbohydrate intake by about 5 grams per day. By the end of the program, this number increases slightly, but never by a lot. Arguments against this diet are that it is far too hard to maintain in a 'real' person's life. Sure, if you have the money for a personal chef as well as an assistant who can follow you around with your special food, this will work for you - so long as you have the discipline - as it has for the celebrities listed above as well as Minnie Driver and Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls.

Of course, there are still the oldies-but-goodies such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. We all have seen the crazy amount of weight Kirstie Allie has lost on the Jenny Craig program, and now she is joined by Valerie Bertinelli as another spokeswoman. Their method is portion control, for the most part. Jenny Craig is slightly newer than Weight Watchers, but very successful and similar in nature.

Just look at how much weight Jenny McCarthy has lost following the Weight Watchers program! She gave birth to her baby and needed to lose the pregnancy weight she had gained. Sarah Ferguson (the Duchess) was their most famous spokesperson until Jenny. Fear is one of my favorite topics. Much of my time has been spent understanding this emotion and how I can overcome my personal fears. A sense of personal empowerment, accomplishment, and fulfillment surges with each fear I face.

The most important fact about fears that we should always bear in mind is this: Fear is not a rational response to whatever challenges stare at us in life. And it is all in our mind, within us, and not anything external to us.

The purpose of fear is to protect us from life threatening circumstances. For example: to run away when there’s a bear chasing us, or to be careful when handling live electric wires.

Fear can cause us to make an irrational response to challenges we face. Fear imposes limits on our minds, removing our clarity and leaving only negative thought patterns. Fear causes us to act emotionally because we panic, our mind shuts down and we respond instinctively to protect ourselves and our egos.

Fear hinders us in situations where there is no direct threat to life, but we might perceive a threat to our life as we know it. Fear of failure is one of the most crippling emotions that can limit your potential in life. Fear of social censure makes one feel lonely. Fear of heights takes away the joy of reaching mountain peaks and touching the clouds.

A personal story: I started photographing people, because I had a deep fear of approaching people and capturing intimate moments. I used to tell myself these stories: “I wasn’t good enough” and “Why would anyone take me, an inexperienced photographer seriously?”. I essentially created this fear because I didn’t want to “look stupid”. I eventually conquered this fear by doing it despite the fear. Then the best way to reduce the fears is to consciously learn about the business in as much depth as you can. Preparation increases confidence and calms those butterflies in the stomach. Just be aware of “Analysis-paralysis” (I will cover this topic in more depth in future posts from my own experience.).

• Affirmations - Use self-affirmations that give a positive spin to whatever it is that you fear. Write these self-affirmations on a stick-it note where it is easily visible. Say you are afraid of criticism from others, then one possible self-affirmation could be - “I am outstanding. I must be outstanding for all the people I will help.”

• Visualization - Positive visualization is projecting an image of yourself overcoming your fears, and is a powerful technique to fight your fears. If you are afraid of your boss, visualize that your boss is smiling at you, appreciating you, and complimenting you of a job well done. Keep this image in your mind firmly.

• “What’s the Worst Case Scenario?” – Often when this question is asked, you realize how silly the fear is. Example, if you are afraid to ask someone out on a date, what’s the worst that could happen? The other person saying “No”? It’s not that bad, right? One of my most enlightening realizations is recognizing that “I have nothing to lose”.

After reading a couple of recent articles, some directly saying that Google hates SEO's and others being more stealthy in their aspersions, the question has to be asked. Does Google really hate SEO's?

Well in this authors humble opinion, No! Google does not hate SEO's, or at least search engine optimisation performed by ethical SEO companies - what would be the point?

Sure make life difficult for people trying to manipulate the search engine results, but in terms of hating an industry, I would have to draw the line short of that (although perhaps some of our less industrious spam-friendly friends may need their wings clipping somewhat).

To be brutally honest, I can see no reason for Google, or any other search engine, to hate SEO's. Search engine optimisation, I would suggest, is one of the key reasons why search engines have become as effective as they currently are in refining their results.

We search engine marketeers, at the end of the day, want our campaigns to work and rely heavily on a ROI focussed service. For this reason, all aspects of the marketing mix have to be working in synergy, so relevance and targeting are fundamental aspects of all our campaigns. Essentially, this is what Google wants - good quality, relevant results.

Google have also provided a wealth of tools, aimed at providing marketeers and potential marketeers with sufficient information to promote their sites - whether it be guidelines, webmaster tools, API access or blogs. Surely such activity is a clear indication of support and not a case of trying to minimise the effect of would be search engine marketeers.

Above all, most search engine marketing agencies don't just offer SEO, they offer paid search (PPC) as well. Surely if the search engines annoy these agencies by attacking SEO, they run the risk of affecting paid search spend. Google, Yahoo and MSN work very closely with agencies as regards their paid search campaigns, so it is logical to assume that to alienate the SEO activity of an agency would surely impact on paid search as well. Too much of a financial risk I would have thought!

Ultimately, the question "Does Google really hate SEO's?" boils down to one key factor. What commercial benefits could there possibly be in curtailing SEO activity?

Over the last 10 years the American housing market has been booming, property values rising across the board and construction was up to near all time highs. This led to empowerment of the American homeowner and first time buyers. With more possibilities due to the resulting rise in equity, countless homeowners began the process of improvement of their homes and setting their sites on bigger and better.

At the end of the last decade the first time home buyer, new to the real estate market and unaware of the trends in real estate, began to tap into their new found equity and over the next several years their spending habits began to look less and less responsible. Thinking the “lucky streak” of rising equity would never end and fueled by the hype in the media, Mr. and Mrs. Homeowner begin to take on more and more debt than they will eventually be capable of handling.

Fast forward 8 years, the market generally speaking is beginning to cool off with real estate values at near all time highs. The fast 2 day time on market has turned into 2 months, 4 months and now average time is beginning to look like 6 months or more.

Being in the mortgage business, my wife and I had begun to realize just how serious this situation was becoming as client after client kept coming back to us for refi’s. Is Your Eating Out of Control?

If you think it is, take heart, you are not alone. According to a recently conducted survey at Harvard, binge eating is more common than any other eating problem. 2.8% of American adults (that's 1 in 35) consider themselves to be binge eaters. That compares to 0.6% that have anorexia, and 1% with bulimia.

Researchers have found that bingeing is more common among those with weight issues. Binge eating often begins as a response to some very stressful event, such as a loved one dying, losing a job or even being dumped by a boyfriend.

Out-of-control overeating can actually reduce anxiety (for the short term, anyway) and because it makes you feel better, it can quickly become addictive.

Its a never ending cycle, though.

Here's what happens. Anxiety or other negative, uncomfortable feelings initiate a binge, the binge acts as a sedative, calming you down and helping you to feel better. The problem is that this calm feeling can often be followed by intense guilt feelings, because you feel badly about how much you just ate. This in turn creates more anxiety and the cycle repeats.

Are you one of the 19 billion Americans who have taken a dietary supplement? You know what I mean by dietary supplement...those pills which promise a quick and painless way to lose weight.. the “get skinny without exercising" variety?

If so, read on for some things you might not have realized about the safety of these diet pills!

The term dietary supplement was legally defined in 1994 as part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.

In order to be considered as a dietary supplement, a product must be identified as such on the label. Additionally, the product must be intended to add to the diet, it must be taken orally as a capsule, tablet, pill or liquid, and it also must contain at least one of the following: vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals or amino acids and other substances.

What makes a dietary supplement different than a food or drug? Under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), dietary supplements are more or less regulated as a food.

This means a manufacturer can market a product without having to go through the rigorous safety testing that drugs do prior to being put on the market. Drug companies must prove a drug is safe before it is marketed. With dietary supplements, the FDA has to prove it is unsafe before the supplement is removed from public sale.

This is a huge difference!

Of course if the system worked as it was designed, the FDA should have adequate control over all supplements marketed, being able to prevent the unsafe ones from being sold.

Unfortunately this is not the case, as you well can imagine. There are just too many supplements currently available for the FDA to keep close tabs on. This means not every supplement on the shelf is safe to take!

Quality control is another potential problem with dietary supplements. In other words, what the label says the product contains and what it actually does may be two different things. Standardization is not required by law. It is up to the manufacturer to give accurate information about the supplement ingredients on the label.

Hopefully this information has given you pause to consider your supplement-buying practices. Not that all supplements are bad or harmful, that’s far from the truth, but the take home message is this:

One that is found as a stand alone supplement and also as an ingredient in formulated products, Bitter orange has been heralded as the next ephedra of weight loss supplements. There are several chemicals contained in bitter orange that appear to work similarly to ephedrine, an active ingredient in ephedra. One of these, synephrine, is a stimulant that may cause high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms, leading to stroke, heart attack and perhaps even death. These risks are increased when bitter orange is taken with other stimulants such as caffeine and decongestants.

With regards to the tourist industry within Spain, Northern Spain and in particular Galicia especially have been very much a hidden treasure and hidden within lies a further particular treasure called Rias Baixas. Of all of the autonomous regions of Spain Galicia is considered the most remote and therein lies the charm of Rias Baixas hidden away longing to be discovered.

Galicia has always been seen as a poor rural region, whose economy was dependent upon agriculture and fishing and did not lend itself to modernisation and yet as far as tourism is concerned it is this constant contact with the past that gives the region its appeal and charm.

The Galicians are fiercely proud of their culture and language and their Celtic heritage; it is what makes them unique (they feel) within modern day Spain.

Galicia always seemed to be a very closed and inward looking area being fiercely resistant to any formal external invasion and in many ways this degree of isolation was very much driven by the geographical location of the region.

In what has been a mountain to climb slowly but surely Galicia is now trying to manage successfully the twin track of its regional lifestyle with a much more modern society and thankfully this appears to have had very positive results with regards to tourism with little sign of negative effects..

This southern part of Galicia’s west coast consists of a series of four Rias or inlets set amongst pine covered hills and really is a most beautiful location.

The beaches on this part of the coast are extremely good, the scenery is terrific and beaches are extremely safe for tourists to bathe in and given that the climate is much milder than on the wild Coast to the north and you can understand why there is such an appeal for this part of Galicia for tourists.

This part of the Galician coast is very much the most popular part and whilst as has been said that the beaches are good they are perhaps not as good as those found further north round the Coast da Morte.

The Rias Baixas is very much the coastal tourist attraction as far as most Galicians are concerned and the description of the area can be very confusing. Firstly there is this general conception that the Rias are like Norwegian Fjords and whilst there may be an argument to be had on this issue further north, in the Rias Baixas the waters are very shallow and the beaches very sandy. The majority of the quality shell fish provided by Galician fishermen is farmed and caught in this area.

There are parts of the coast line of the Rias Baixas that are popular but by and large the coast is unspoilt. The areas around Vilagarcia de arousa and Panxon are the made tourist areas but there are quieter areas of the Rias such as the stretch of coast between Muros and Noia.

This part of the Galician coastline provides some of the richest and most fertile fishing areas on the entire Spanish coast and the climate in this area is such that it produces the finest in Galician Wines.

How to Find Relationships Through the Law of Attraction

When searching for a mate or even a platonic friendship, it is important to take inventory of what you really want in the relationship that you seek. Find some quiet time and list the qualities that you would like in a significant other. Start with qualities. The outer appearance isn't important at the moment.

Write down every quality and every detail that you believe will make you happy. Choose the qualities that you would like; not the qualities your mom would prefer, or a certain outer appearance that you think your friends would envy. The only relationship worth having is one that gives you the unadulterated joy you deserve.

Once you have collected your list, take time to create a scenario featuring you and your significant other. See and feel yourself with your mate as you enjoy his/her company. Imagine meeting at the coffee shop in the morning before work. See and feel yourself eating together, watching movies together, walking on the beach or in the woods; whatever would make you happy with your other half. When you are visualizing your mate, try to envision his/her appearance; one that is pleasing to you, but don't put too much into the outer shell. Invest most of your thoughts and feelings into what the spirit of this soul mate is like.

Every day, visualize this person that is coming into your life.
When people have problems manifesting relationships into their lives, it is usually traceable to impatience and doubt. The second way is to spam. Spamming blasts your links into many forums, blogs and directories. You can create almost 2000 backlinks with this method in a week. Ever got those viagra ads posted on your Honda fansite? The spammers probably thought triangular blue pill spin up your twinturbos more rapidly. You've just been spammed.

Finally, the third way is to create linkbait articles. Linkbait is a controversial writeup that compells other webmasters to link to your article. It's not always healthy for the ego.

These days, I no longer use such tired methods to rake in backlinks. I go for a lazier, faster way. I call it PDF Marketing.

FYI, a PDF is a document created by adobe acrobat. Link building using this method requires that you write a truly snazzy 3-4 page article that people would love. Impregnate every page of your article with links to your site. Compile it into a PDF document and upload it to free download sites. Take a glass of lemonade and sit back. That was the hard part. Pretty soon, freeloaders would pick up on the document. They'd enjoy it and post it on their sites. They'd buzz about it. More people would download it. Half of them will stick it into their webs. Then guess what? In a fortnight, you'd have thousands of sites hosting your PDF that links back to your web!

The title of this article is designed to illustrate the point of this article. Today we won't be taking a look at black-hat search engine optimization tactics. Admittedly, I've toyed with them in a "know your enemy" kind of way but I'm no expert on advanced cloaking techniques nor effective link sp@mming tactics. What we're going to cover here are the hidden (i.e. dark) areas of effective optimization strategy.

I've written numerous times in past articles and blog posts that using tricks to rank your site highly is, in the end, ineffective as tricks imply a manipulation of the ranking formula and will eventually become obsolete as the search engines work to advance their algorithms and shut down such possible abuses.

But here I'm going to illustrate some of the tricks we use to drive traffic to our site. Is this a conflict? Not really; these "tricks" aren't so much directed at search engines as they are website owners and visitors. These are marketing tricks, not SEO tricks - they just happen to help you with your rankings.Before we begin let's review an important point about Google. When most people think of Google they think of the dominant search engine (and in that they would be right) HOWEVER if Google was primarily a search engine they would be much smaller than they are now.

No, they are an advertising company and the world's largest at that. To this end they need traffic, market share, and clicks. They need you to love Google.com, visit it often, visit their other properties and offerings such as Gmail. If you do this, the odds of you clicking on one of the paid ads increases and their primary function is fulfilled.

It is driven by this purpose that Google has developed the most complex search algorithm that has ever existed. Their search is their primary source of traffic. The better their results, the more you will return, the greater the likelihood you will click an ad, the more revenue they generate (thus leading to their continued increases in reported revenue quarter-after-quarter). Why is this important?

Because this is the driving force of their current algorithm and will be for the foreseeable future we can assume that any action that increases relevant traffic to your site, increases the stickiness of your site and/or increases the number of links from relevant sites to yours will help your rankings and it will help Google keep their visitors loyal.

Let's also recall the purpose of this article. This is NOT an article about black-hat search engine optimization tactics, it's about the hidden aspects of SEO that are often overlooked. And so, without further ado, let's get down to the meat - what are the dark tactics that you can use to boost your website rankings.Building A Sticky Site

A point I've made in past articles that I will reinforce here as opposed to "contradicting" will be that of the importance of a sticky site. Of course, monitoring your statistics to assess your visitors' behavior is an important practice for the conversions on your site however it's importance from a search engine optimization perspective is often overlooked. I've mentioned before and I'll mention again, the search engines have the ability to monitor the length of time a visitor spends between visits to that engine.

If you are on Google, enter "seo services" into it and visit the Beanstalk site but only spend 5 seconds there before hitting the back button Google can infer that the site was not what you were looking for. If it was 5 or 10 minutes before you returned back to Google they could thus infer that you found content you found useful to your query.

So let's put that more obviously, having a site on which visitors find what they're looking for quickly, easily, and in a visually pleasing way will increase their time on your site which will thus increase the assumption by the search engines that you are relevant for the phrase the searcher has queried.

This will reinforce that your site does indeed belong among the top site. As a disclaimer: this works on a mass scale so don't go running off and clicking through to you competitors and quickly hitting the back button. First, it's unethical (like clicking their paid links) and second, it doesn't work like that (how big a hole would THAT be in the algorithm) so it would only be a waste of your time.

The how to of building a sticky site I will leave to designers (being an SEO - my skills lie more in understanding mathematical formula).

Clickability Counts
The engines know when your site appears in a set of search results and they further know how often your site was click on when it appeared. The more often your site is selected when presented in a set of results the more relevant it is assumed to be and thus, the more entrenched it becomes in that set of results (assuming your stickiness issues are dealt with).

What this means is that your title and description matter, not just as part of the classical search engine optimization tactics we've used them for since the 90's but also to draw visitors to your site. Fortunately the end goal of the engines closely matches what your own end goal should be for your site - maximizing traffic. Let's take a look at two example titles that the Beanstalk site could have:

An old-school over-optimized title: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Services Company | Beanstalk Search Engine Positioning | SEO Services, Internet Marketing, Link Building, Consulting, Training & Copywriting

Can you see the different? While our title changes periodically as we test new titles for clickthroughs we always keep it short, easily read, and always such that the whole title will appear in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). Our clickthroughs are much higher with shorter titles than longer and we have seen the same results with client sites.The same applies to your description tag but the rules are a bit different. With your description tag you want to make sure to include your targeted keywords and make the copy compelling to a searcher. The reason for this is that when searched keywords are including in your description, is is typically the description that appears in the SERPs. This give you an opportunity to determine how your ad to the world appears.

You write your title, you write your description - write both well and your clickthroughs will increase. And when your clickthroughs go up, the implied relevancy the engines will assume your site has to that phrase will increase with it and thus, so too will your rankings for that phrase.

Getting People To Link To You
We're not going to bother discussing reciprocal link building, directory submissions or the other usual suspects. There are countless articles out there on those topics; what we're going to focus on here are the tactics for getting articles picked up widely the resources you want to get them onto (and if you're reading this - you know it works) as well as ways to get the links that both you and the search engines will love the most - the ones you don't ask for or work for outside of creating a great site with useful content. The best part of these links is that they not only work to boost your link popularity but they also tend to drive great traffic to your site. Let's begin with articles.When you're working to publish an article there are two main audience members: the readers and, more importantly, the editors (I say more importantly as they're the ones that determine if you have any readers at all). There are some tactics for increasing both:

Write a compelling title. This gets back to the point I was making in the first paragraph. Everyone is interested in black hat search engine optimization, even those of us who don't practice it. Readers will be drawn to it as it receives relatively low coverage and editors like to publishing something that they feel may draw some controversy. While this article doesn't get into black hat tactics as some editors may have hoped, it will draw them in and get their attention.
Find quality related resources and get the article published there. I generally use a tool like PR Prowler to find good, quality resources to submit articles to. You can do it manually through a search engine, PR Prowler just speeds up the process so much that after its first use it's paid for itself. You want the places you submit to, to be related to your industry and you want them to provide a link back. If you can setup that link as anchor text instead of your URL - all the better.

Keep a list and add to it. If you're going to publish multiple articles don't start from scratch every time. Keep a list and try to add a few sites to it with each submission. This will keep your list growing and get you more exposure/links as time goes on.
Keep a good relationship with the editors. They are the end-all-be-all of whether this tactic will work or not as a link and traffic building tactic. Make sure you're polite and don't write nasty emails if you get declined. Read what they say and make sure to take it into account with future articles.

But what if you don't want to build links with articles, what if you want to get links the old fashioned way (and I'm talking about the old old old way - you know, before there was any SEO value to it). What if you would like to get people to link to you simply because they like your content (I know, shocking but it actually happens !!!) There are a few different factors that you need to take into account to accomplish this. Here are a few important rules to follow:

You'll need to create content that others will want to link to. This is an art in-and-of-itself. I wrote about some of the basic rules involved with this in a past article "Building Link Bait" and so I won't repeat it here.
Get the bait into social bookmarking sites. This will get people interested in your topic aware of it. If it's good, they may link to it. Don't just focus on Digg and the other majors, look around for some industry-specific bookmarking sites. For example, when this article is complete I'll work to get it into Sphinn, an SEO bookmarking site.
Get the bait into forums and/or blogs. I'm not talking about blog sp@mming here, I'm talking about finding blogs and forums that are RELATED to your topic and who's visitors could be genuinely helped by the tool, information, etc. that you're providing. Don't worry if the blog has rel="nofollow" on the links. The purpose is webmaster awareness, not getting links from the blogs (I'll leave that to a different article).
Promote the bait on your site. Use banners, links, your blog, etc. to build awareness.
Provide the code to link to your bait. The easier you make it for people to link to you, the more of them will. Provide the code with a text and banner option and you'll increase the number of people who will link to you.
Put out a press release. If it's big enough news, put out a press release. If the media grabs it you've won the lottery both in publicity and in high valued links.
If the topic of your bait is searched on the engines, rank it. :)

Conclusion
So these are the darker arts we're talking about. Not black-hat, just overlooked more often than not. Add these to your repertoire of thoughts as you optimize and link building for your site and you've given yourself a one-up over most if not all of your competition.

5) Content is king, so make nice content. Check for grammatical and spellings errors off line, before publishing the blog. Good content brings natural links, so it is always advised to write properly. If you are not good at writing, then hire a writer. Pay someone who writes well.

6) The next step is to add the feeds. Check out feed burner and get your feeds running. You can see on the left sidebars, I have the feed subscription buttons placed there.

7) Try the blog top sites. This is a good way to show the world how popular your blog is. This also brings some traffic. Check out my blogs ranks on the top sites, the ranks are visible on the sidebar.

8) Promote your blog with the power of social bookmarking. To start with, join technorati, it’s a blog search engine, and it is huge. Then try del.icio.us it is another social bookmarking website which gives a lot of traffic. There are a few more like this, digg, stumbleupon, reddit etc, I will make another post for this topic, let’s not get too deep into this here.

9) Frequently visit blogs of your niche, even subscribe to it. When ever you see a new post, read it properly and give a good comment on it. Don’t post spam comments; make a nice comment that gets accepted. Some blogs are no-follow and some are not. But remember the no-follow is only for google and there is msn and yahoo also for the search. This step can help you get a lot of targeted readers apart from the link popularity. You can even give blogroll links to a few of the good blogs that you regularly visit.

10) Try to post regularly, if you don’t post for sometime long, then you will lose a lot of subscription and regular readers. Blogging is a passion, don’t just blog for the shake of it.

Leaders Manage Goals To Ensure More Is Not Less

Leaders manage goals to know when more becomes less. Leaders know there is a place where further effort, energy, knowledge, people resources and money don't really add additional value. In fact, more of anything, after a certain point, may be stealing from other requirements. Leaders know time, money and effort, by themselves, are really inefficient measures - results are what count. And knowing what results are needed avoids the "more is less" trap.

Leaders know "more" can keep you stuck in the same place long after you've achieved most of what's really needed. "More" creates a comfort zone based on activity that tells us there is more to be learned - more to be prepared - more to be added. Leaders know that that comfort zone is an illusion, and that goals create action - they keep us from fooling ourselves into believing activity is accomplishment.

A personal example of what I mean:

Whenever I need information - for a client, a prospect, an article - I really dig in and search all kinds of resources to become really prepared. My searches have the potential to lead me deeper and deeper into a subject - or wider and wider into alternative subjects or information. The opportunities for research are endless - and so tempting. That must have to do with my high Theoretical value. I really value information for its own sake. I feel like I'm really accomplishing things as I acquire more and more knowledge. More is better - or is it? Problem is - even the most expert of experts have to set research aside - and act - if they are to become better known, better appreciated and better compensated. And if the search for "more" gets in the way of acting, then "more" is definitely less. I protect myself from that trap through goals.

Another example from my vast archives of "more" not being better:

An exercise I do daily is a hand grip exercise. I started doing it about five months ago when I felt my grip needed strengthening. I use the kind of gripper that has a spring that is squeezed until the handles touch. At the beginning it was a real effort to reach 30 reps for each hand. My goal was to reach 60 reps for each hand. I'm now up to 90 reps for each hand, and I hold the 90th rep for 60 seconds. I know I can do more if I persist, but I don't. Why? I'm way beyond my goal and I think I've reached the point where more is not better - the additional time I could use on this one exercise can be better used on something else - like converting my 24 pack abs into a six pack. In this case I've decided more would be a poor use of my time and energy. Now for the abs.......

On a work level, how often are we persuaded that more is better? In some cases, more is definitely better - like in more quality sales calls. But in other cases, like gaining more information before acting, or spending more time on preparation, more may be less. And that's where goals come in. Goals that measure results, not effort, create a climate of action - action to reach a measurable goal. And then consciously assessing the value of exceeding the goal.

Leaders know the biggest enemy of "more is less" is perfection. Perfection may be a worthy striving, but many careers have gone down the tubes by letting perfect get in the way 0f good. When taking more time to prepare for that perfect presentation, when just one more test may yield the data to make a perfect product, when the acquisition of knowledge, or money, or expertise, keeps action to meet a goal from happening - more is less.

In Harry Beckwith's book - "How To Sell The Invisible," he says "Don't let perfect get in the way of good." When I'm tempted to take the time and effort to make very good become perfect, I stop. And if I'm convinced that what I have done is very good, I tell myself to stop seeking more, and I act to complete whatever it is I'm doing. And how do I figure out what is very good? Goals.

In creating goals, resist the temptation to create them based on the best of intentions. Base them on hard headed, clear requirements to meet the larger goals of the enterprise. Can they be an improvement on performance levels already attained? Of course. But know when to say "enough," and go on to other equally important goals. Defining "enough" is the secret leaders use to ensure "more" doesn't become less.

Take a look at your own goals, habits of thought, behaviors and attitudes. Identify where you can use "more is less" in defining your own actions and success. I suspect you will find, in your analysis, that there are areas - right now - today - where you can change so that perfect doesn't get in the way of good.

Yes! You’re an absolute genius at driving traffic to your website. You’re getting a gazillion hits and unique page impressions—every minute!

You’ve got so much traffic, tying up so much bandwidth, that Al Gore is thinking of producing a new movie about you: An Inconvenient Internet Presence: How one marketer destroyed what I invented.

And yet, despite all your fame and glory... no one’s buying what you’re selling!

In other words...

Your Website Sucks!

Way back in the stone age of internet history... roughly five or so years ago... a website was a website was a website.

They all looked alike, they all worked alike (which basically meant they really didn’t do anything) and they all accomplished the same thing—pretty much nothing.

A website was a virtual business card. And since every business ordered business cards, every business ordered a website.

And then vanity and misguided creativity took hold of the entrepreneurial imagination.

The business card website quickly evolved into a multi-varied, multi-page behemoth. And as technology grew faster than our ability to master its consequences, the art of website design became an addiction—consuming the health, time, patience and money of the website owner—and the unwary visitor.

Pop-ups, hover-overs and other hovercraft, web 2.0, RSS, flash media, video, audio, 4-wheel drive, GPS, this and that, inspired and invigorated web developers and designers to continually raise the bar. Their ultimate end game: keeping visitors hostage to a website—tossing them into the black hole of web pyrotechnics, where nothing, not even light can escape.

And it didn’t bother them in the least that their Frankenstein website creations required an eternity to load on the average computer screen—eating RAM, disturbing REM, crashing hard drives, destroying transmissions, shackling legs in irons—lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Okay, let’s get back on track here...

Today, there are basically two and a half types of websites... those that inform and educate, those that inform educate and sell... and those that only sell.

Do You Know to Which Group Your Website Belongs?

Are you sure?

As a marketing and sales copywriter—I can tell you in a heartbeat.

I get phone calls and emails—almost daily—from individuals and company representatives lamenting the fact that their website doesn’t convert, and they want to know if I can help.

My first question, of course, is... how much money you got, pal?

Just kidding... but it is in the back of my mind.

Anyway... here are those two and a half website styles in a nutshell... and in their absolute worst incarnations...

The “I’ve really got nothing to say” Website

Typically, this website belongs to a small business owner. They’ve got a single product or a single service that they’re offering—yet, they have 20 or more pages on their website.

They’ve got a home page, a contact page, an about us page, a mission page, a subscribe-to-our-newsletter page, a link page, a testimonial page, a preferred vendor page, a site page, a leave-a-comment page and a product page for each person, animal, business or situation for which this one product can be of use.

But... there’s only two or three sentences on each page—if that much! So by default or design, graphical wizardry fills the remaining and yawning void.

Now, is there anything wrong with having a “brochure” style website?

Of course not—if you’re GE, Amazon, Dell Computer or any other business that has a diverse and extensive product and service mix.

For quicker and easier surfing (read: optimized usability) such a company needs a website that will logically and intuitively segment their wares and information on to different web pages.

But, if your company is a one-trick pony... a microsite will do you just fine.

Why waste your visitor’s time, forcing them to click here and there (and out of boredom flee to your competitor’s website), when everything they need to know and find about you, your product or service can comfortably and ergonomically fit on one page?

“...But I don’t want my website to look like one of those long-scrolling websites, you know, the type that sells information products!”

You’re laughing. Trust me... I hear that all the time, and it kills me.

My preferred retort to that bit of ignorance should be: “Well, those sites, the better conceived ones, typically rack up millions of dollars in sales—usually in a very short time. And so how much did you make last week?”

But instead, I politely suggest that they be sure to tell their web designer that he or she should stay away from that sort of, uh, look—but still put it on one page (two at the most).

Which now brings us to “that” sort of look, or site, the long scrolling, one-page kind.

The Kick-butt, Killer Commando Website
Because I don’t want to get into the debate, again, over whether long copy outsells short copy (it absolutely does!)... let me just state that a long scrolling, one-page, “information product kind” of website has but one purpose in its virtual life. To sell one thing—and to sell that one thing right off the page—right then and there!

And because “properly executed” websites of this kind can sell, and sell very well... uninitiated and salivating entrepreneurs who won’t take the time—or spend the money—to achieve a similar level of selling sophistication... will blindly, poorly and sacrilegiously copy that type of website’s form and style—while ignoring its compelling substance.

They’ll slap up a website, using a website design program they downloaded off the internet the night before.

And then they’ll fill it up with pages and pages (the amount of which seemingly corresponds, oddly enough, to the entrepreneur’s age) of overblown, hype-filled, irrelevant, stream of conscious verbal diarrhea.

And Holy Baloney! the impossible promises they make—with no credible proof provided—and the multitude of “freebies” offered (valued at thousands of dollars more than the $49.95 or $495 program, system or product being hawked)—is an absolute marvel to behold.

And then, of course, there’s the false deadline and limited supply (without a reasonable explanation as to why).

The list of unadulterated snake oil BS, sales gaffs and obvious chicanery on these sites is endless—indeed, the list is as long as the website.

Fortunately though, few are swindled, and these sites disappear relatively quickly, simply because...they don’t sell well.

And yet... the online, long-copy, scrolling sales letter, when conceived with good and honest intentions and executed with consummate sales skill, can quickly create a fortune, and a loyal and well-deserved following for a gifted entrepreneur where neither existed before.

That cheap imitations have muddied the worth and image of one of the mightiest and most sublime manifestations of salesmanship in print... is unfortunate. But they will endure... to the benefit of seller... and customer.

Which now brings us, finally, to the website by half...

The Landing, Splash, Squeeze Page
This rose by any other name—should be short, sweet and to the point.

What a surgical military strike is to the field of combat, the landing page is to the theater of marketing. Its sole purpose is conversion—to get the reader to buy, subscribe or inquire—fast. All the “selling and persuasion” typically comes before the visitor lands on this short-copy, quick-strike page.

Interestingly, one mistake many marketers make in regard to the landing page is not in the design of one—but in the lack of one.

They’ll do all the right things (hopefully) to generate traffic—but rather than drive the visitor to a page that is a dedicated follow-up to the ad the visitor just read—they drive them to their company’s home page, instead.

Then the visitor has to hunt and click for their particular item of interest.

If you give a visitor/potential buyer the slightest opportunity to get sidetracked and not complete the desired action—they will!

Another mistake is not designing the landing page to look and read the same way as the ad that attracted them in the first place. In short, there’s no continuity—no sense that they’re in the right place—primarily because there’s no repetition of the offer made in the ad.

Even though the potential customer has already been seduced, persuaded and sold on purchasing your product or service—or just providing their email address—you still must continue to seduce, persuade and sell them on your landing page.

You just don’t have to take as much time doing it. Just repeat the salient selling points already made in the ad—including the guarantee or risk reversal element.

But don’t be too quick and smart about it, either.

Don’t request your customer’s credit card number in a cold, calculating and peremptory manner. Continue to entice and excite your customers on your landing page—so that they can’t bear to wait a moment longer to give you their name and email address... or their money.

site has finally come to just what she is looking for and
is about to make a purchase. It's a sunny afternoon, and
her cat, who happens to be sitting on the moss under the
visitor's large fifty-year-old snow-rose bonsai tree,
suddenly jumps down, and the priceless tree topples over.

In the blink of an eye, your visitor exits your site, and
your sale is dust - unless you have had the foresight to
utilize an autoresponder that has captured her email
address. If you have installed an autoresponder, you can
then follow-up with her, and in all probability, make the
sale when the poor woman has finished repotting her
precious bonsai.

Autoresponders are remarkable, versatile programs that do
so much more than just automatically answer your email.
Here are a few ideas that will help you to creatively and
productively use your autoresponder to transform the casual
visitor into a profitable customer. Use your autoresponder
to:

1. Publish a newsletter. Certain quality autoresponders
will manage subscriptions and follow-up with interested
prospects. Your newsletter can keep your visitors informed
about your services or products, while building your
reputation as a credible expert in your particular
business.

2. Publish a newsletter only for your affiliates. Inform
them of current sales you are running and of promotional
material that your affiliates can use themselves to
increase their commissions. Include tips, advice, and
techniques that your affiliates can use to successfully go
out and promote your business.

3. Write reviews. Cover books, software, music, e-books,
movies, etc., and put each review in an autoresponder.
Review your affiliate programs, using a link to your
affiliate's page in your autoresponder.

4. Distribute your articles. Writing and distributing
targeted articles is a powerful tool to build your business
credibility, bring traffic to your site, and increase your
sales potential. If your articles contain valuable
information, many editors will print what is known as a
resource box for you. A resource box contains your bio and
a brief description of your service or product. It can also
contain your autoresponder address. Let's say you've
written fifty articles. Put them on separate autoresponder
accounts and create a master list that contains the titles
of each article, the autoresponder address, and a brief
abstract. Then promote your master list. Additionally,
include your publishing guidelines so your affiliates can
add their articles to your list, increasing the number of
writers who are represented in your article list.

5. Create mailing lists. Inform subscribers to your
articles when you've written new ones that they may want to
publish in their own newsletter or website.

6. Automate your sales process. Use an ad to insure
repeated exposure of your message, which has been proven to
effectively increase sales. In your ad, put your
autoresponder address where a visitor will be exposed to
numerous marketing materials. This multiplies the chances
of converting visitors into customers. For example, if
you're selling a particular product, put testimonials about
how spectacular it is on your autoresponder, and add a
detailed, enticing description of your product.

7. Distribute advertising. Let's say you sell advertising
on your website or in your newsletter or e-zine. Set your
autoresponder to send the information about rates and how
to place an ad automatically to all prospects' email
addresses. Then have your autoresponder follow-up. It can
also send notification of any special deals you are
currently offering.

8. Distribute an email course. Each day, have your
autoresponder send out another lesson. Just be sure that
each lesson has quality content - not a sales pitch. Your
content will do the selling for you, and will do it much
more effectively. You can include tips centered on a
different topic for each lesson, illustrating how your
product will benefit the reader. Include the tangible
benefits the visitor will reap by purchasing your product.
Make sure to include a paragraph or two at the end of each
lesson enticing your prospect to consider making a
purchase.

9. Automate a reminder about your service or product after
a visitor has completed your course. This will increase the
possibility of sales from visitors who have taken your
course but are dragging their feet about actually making a
purchase. You can also use these reminders to promote new
products or services, and the products and services of your
affiliate programs.

10. Distribute free reports. This gives your visitor an
idea of the type of information you can provide and the
quality of your product or service. Make sure these reports
are not sales letters or you will more than likely lose a
potential customer than gain a sale.

11. Create trivia quizzes on your site and place the
answers in an autoresponder. Your visitor will then be
motivated to request your autoresponder, and you will have
a record of the visitors' email addresses who took your
quiz. Or create a contest and have any visitors that enter
send their responses to your autoresponder. Your
autoresponder can be set-up to send them a confirmation of
their entry.

12. Offer a trial version of your product. Give your
prospects a sample of your ebook, course, software,
membership, etc. People who are exposed to a little taste
often end up wanting the whole pie. You can also capture
their email addresses when you offer them a free trial from
your website. Set up your autoresponder to give
instructions on how to obtain their free trial, and then
make sure to follow-up to try and close the sale.

13. Link to hidden pages on your autoresponder. For
example, a hidden page could be your affiliate page that
contains graphics, promotional articles, and text links
that interested affiliates can make use of. Inform visitors
that they may have free access to your affiliate page by
simply requesting your autoresponder. You will then gather
a list of visitors who may be interested in becoming your
affiliates.

14. Use an autoresponder on your order page. Post a request
form for visitors to be notified of special offers or
discounts in the future. This creates a very effective
mailing list that contains the names of people who are
already your customers.

15. Put your links page on your autoresponder. It should
contain up to fifty links that would be of particular
interest to your visitors. Make sure to add your own
promotional copy at the top or bottom of this page.

Now that you have proof that autoresponders can be used
creatively, see if you can come up with some brilliant

If you can hook your press release to current events or social issues, you increase your chances of having it picked up. If not, then make sure your story is relevant to the needs, wants or problems of your community or target audience.

Use an active, not passive, voice. Use strong verbs that will bring your press release to life. If there is controversy, describe it. There is an old adage in the news business: If it cries it flies, and if it bleeds, it leads (Not very nice, but it is often true.) So, while you may not be crying or bleeding, make what you are writing about stand out. Use active verbs. Write partnered rather than "entered into a partnership" or engaged rather than interested, etc. Writing in this manner will help guarantee that your press release will be read.

Insurer Lowers Rates for Breast Cancer Patient

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. this week said it would offer life insurance to women with certain types of early stage breast cancer at the same rates as healthy women, reflecting increased coverage for individuals with medical conditions that would have been roadblocks to insurance several years ago.

To make such policies feasible, insurers are looking beyond mortality tables to clinical medical underwriting, which takes into account medical advances. The demand for “impaired risk insurance” is expected to increase as baby boomers age and medical advances turn once-deadly conditions into chronic illnesses.

“Most people are insurable,” said Matt McAvony, president of Target Insurance Services in Overland Park, Kan., and chair-elect of the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies. “Most people can get an offer to buy insurance.”

Hartford said its new coverage is available to women who have been treated for the first time for “small, well-differentiated, localized Stage 1 breast cancer and have a strong prognosis for survival based on the results of common tests.”

Hartford estimates that 100,000 women who were treated during the last five years for breast cancer meet the guidelines for its new insurance, representing about 15% of the women diagnosed with stage-one breast cancer.

“We see it as an affirmation of the progress made in the clinical area,” said Ann Hoven, chief medical director for the Hartford, Conn., company's Individual Life Division.

She said that Hartford routinely monitors clinical research about serious illnesses, and since 1991, deaths from breast cancer have dropped 20% because of early detection and improved treatment. After conducting its own research Hartford decided it could offer this new insurance, which would significantly decrease the cost of life insurance for a woman.

For example, a 50 year-old woman who had been treated for stage-one breast cancer previously would have had to pay $1,500 over a year plus an additional $2,500 annually for five years. Now, women who meet the new underwriting guidelines would pay only $1,545 a year.

An estimated 5% to 10% of the insurance-buying population has a medical condition that may make their insurance priced beyond standard. That number likely will grow as baby boomers age and medical advances enable patients to live long lives despite a serious medical condition.

“I'm insuring people today who had prostate cancer six years ago, people who years ago, we wouldn't have touched,” said Jack Fischer, who owns Amsterdam Financial, an independent financial-services firm in Chicago. The firm specializes in securing insurance for impaired risk cases.

“We have more knowledge, more comparisons, more statistics, more years have gone by with positive results,” said Mr. Fischer.

U.S. Financial Life Insurance Co. in Cincinnati sells only impaired risk insurance and has grown annually since it was established 15 years ago.

It provides coverage for individuals with, among other things, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. U.S. Financial takes a multipronged approached when evaluating potential policyholders and considers whether a person is living a healthy lifestyle and following a doctor's orders.

The company, a subsidiary of AXA Financial Inc., sells the policies through life-insurance agents rather than directly to the public.

“I think many people believe they can't get life insurance is because of a medical condition, and that was true years ago, but not today,” said Hartford's Ms. Hoven, who compared the new insurance with changes that occurred about a decade ago for patients with a history of heart attacks.

Mr. Fischer encouraged people with medical conditions to find agents who are knowledgeable about impaired-risk Insurance. “You really want someone who has done it and understands it before they write you up,” he said.

Living the same date over and over again can either be a blessing or a curse. In real life however you do not get a second chance to make a first impression. This means you are going to have at least one rotten date in your life (if you have not experienced it already) and there is no going back to correct it.

It can be a lot of things that contribute to a bad date which are not in your control. Rotten weather, a restaurant with less than stellar service or some other external circumstance that neither of you could have predicted. Hopefully you and your date will have a sense of humor about such misfortunes and allow it to draw the two of you closer together.

And then there is the obvious. For whatever reason, it is not working between you and your date. It could be a personality clash, lack of conversation to the point of uncomfortable silence or a number of other things. You may not want to write the other person off fully but for now this date is done.

So how can you deal with a rotten date after all is said and done

1. You Are Forgiven

There is a tendency for people to beat themselves up terribly when a date goes bad. They keep asking themselves the same question; what do I do wrong? It is okay to critique yourself to see if there was something you could have said or done differently to make the date go smoother, but if you are using that question to punish yourself then stop right there. Nobody is perfect and beating yourself up from the time your bad date ended to the time of your next date is a good form of self sabotage.

Keep in mind it takes two to tango so unless you were blatantly rude and obnoxious, it is okay to give some of that blame to the other person. You do not have to call them up and start critiquing them either. Just accept the fact that what is done is done and move on.

2. The Friendly Shoulder

It is not good to keep things bottled up inside of you. The best thing to do sometimes after a bad date is to talk it over with a good friend or a close relative. They may be able to offer objective criticism and advice; or they may understand that the only thing you need right now is someone who is willing to listen. If they are willing to give you the friendly shoulder to vent, cry or laugh on then by all means take it.

3. Get Going

You can avoid a lot of self pity by forcing yourself to get involved with other activities. Exercise, go out with friends to a movie or a restaurant (if your bad date happened in a certain restaurant, try to go back to that place with your friends to show there is no lingering stigma) or plan a special occasion for yourself. Getting active is a great way to truly put the bad date experience behind you.

Things happen in life and a rotten date is one of them. The key is to not beat yourself up over it. Just know that it is okay to forgive you and the other person, find a friendly shoulder and by all means get going with activity. This way you can go a long way to guaranteeing your next date will be a good one.

Don't Waste Your Time - Use it Wisely

Do you waste time? Are you lazy and indolent or are you continuously on the go, using every minute to the maximum?

If you are in the first category, there are a lot of very obvious things you can do to improve, but in this article I want to concentrate on those of us who are already using our time constructively and examine how you can squeeze even more from your day.

You may think that your life is so full that this is impossible, but I recently ran an inventory of how I used my time and realised that there was still some room for improvement. Here's what I discovered.

Timespace #1 – For years I avoided doing any kind of exercise. It was pretty easy for me, I had been skinny all my life and even though I wasn't too fit, I was still the right weight. As I got older, though I realised that I had to take my body a bit more seriously.

Since then I have become a moderate, regular exerciser; I now go running for half an hour every second day and visit the gym three times a week. No problem there; I get satisfaction from using my time well and I appreciate the results.

However, I calculated that I am spending about five hours per week doing great things for my body, but nothing for my mind. So now when I'm pounding the streets or straining at the weights, I use the opportunity to listen to self development programs on my I-Pod, to concentrate on goal visualization, to practice affirmations or just focus on being grateful for all the good things in my life. And there's a bonus too; because the blood is racing through my veins, my brain is more alert and better prepared to learn and grow.

Timespace #2 – I drive a lot. My business requires a good deal of travel and most of it is done in the car. I used to listen to music on the radio or go into an almost trance-like ‘auto pilot' mode, usually to escape the tedium of long distance driving.

Now, though, I put a self development CD in the player, or a language course, or again, I use the time to practice visualizations and affirmations. The privacy of your little tin box allows you to shout, sing, laugh or mumble. Who cares? You are on your own. It's your space.

Timespace #3 – Finally, this one is not so much about finding extra time as making better use of the time I thought I was using wisely. My personal time audit showed me that I was wasting a whole hour, sometimes more, at the beginning of the day catching up on the overnight e-mail load and then planning what I was going to do for the rest of the day.

I prided myself on being an efficient time warrior, but I now realise, that I was missing one of the biggest mistakes of all.

So how did I fix that? Simple. I changed two things. Firstly, I now do my planning, the night before, by taking ten minutes, near to the end of the evening and writing down everything I want to achieve the next day. The bonus here is that overnight, my mind works on the issues even while I sleep, so by the time I get started next day, I am far better prepared.

Secondly, I leave my e-mail inbox until lunchtime. I spend the morning getting through the goals I assigned the night before and then just before I take a break for lunch, I race through my inbox. That way, I find I already feel good about what I've done so far in the day, my mind is much more focused and I don't get distracted.

So no matter how efficient you think you are, take a look again at your day and I'll bet you can find some extra layers of time, you never knew you had. Good hunting.

I have never quite understood how to learn a foreign language. It is a shame too. Learning a foreign language is pretty necessary in this day and age. If you learn foreign language, it makes you more employable in a variety of areas, as well as enhancing your cultural experience. Nevertheless, I have only managed to learn a foreign language once, and it was so difficult for me that I doubt I will ever try it again. It was just too much work!

I took a little bit of French in high school, but I dropped it after a couple of semesters. In general, I was a good student. Most subjects came easy to me, but I couldn't manage to learn foreign language no matter how hard I tried. I loved French culture and French literature, and I desperately wanted to learn how to speak French, but it just wouldn't come. I ended up taking an American sign language class to get rid of my learn foreign language requirement. Even that was difficult!

I struggled with learning a foreign language all through college. I went to a liberal arts university that demanded it, and I knew that I could not graduate with the degree that I wanted unless I managed to learn foreign language. I tried using how to speak French software, hiring a private tutor, and working with conversation partners, but nothing worked. I only successfully managed to learn foreign language when I finally went abroad. I spent a year in France, and it was one of the most difficult years of my life. Ultimately, however, it was also one of the most rewarding. I would never have managed to learn foreign language without it, you see.

To this day, I believe that the only way to really learn foreign languages is to completely immerse yourself in another culture. If you can speak English at all, you will not learn how to speak a foreign language. Instead, you will keep falling back on your English skills. If you need to learn foreign language in order to interact on a daily basis, however, it will come much more quickly. If I learned a foreign language in a year, you can probably do it using the same methods in six months!

One under-recognized benefit of going on a cruise is duty-free shopping. Even if you have no plans of going on anything remotely like a shopping expedition at your ports of call, you can still shop duty free on most cruise ships by just visiting some of the on-board shops.

I don't know why they call it duty-free shopping, since the name is a bit misleading. It ought to be called tax-free shopping. When you venture into international waters (50 miles off shore), merchandise can be sold without having to add on city, state, or national taxes. Duty-free stores are shops that sell the merchandise for exactly the price marked, with no taxes tacked on at the cash register.

Many cruise shops feature luxury items, the kinds of things that would surely attract sales tax and possibly other taxes in many countries. If you are interested in buying a watch that you know costs $500 or a bottle of perfume that retails for about $75 at your local department store, you may not be initially impressed at the duty-free store. The price tags for these two items will likely be $500 and $75 or very close to it.

The difference is that the duty-free price is the total price you'll pay. Buy that same watch in a U.S. jewelry store and you can expect to pay sales tax of around $40. The perfume would tack on about $6 in sales tax. This is based on a rough 8% sales tax rule for the U.S. If you live in Canada, sales tax hovers around 12% and it is even higher in Europe.

Europeans may notice the bargains at duty-free shops more quickly than Americans because in Europe, it is customary for the sales tax to be figured into the price tag before you get to the cash register. In the U.S., sales tax is one of those things nobody talks about until you get to the cash register when it just magically appears on your bill.

Many cruise lines also offer certain luxury items at discounts. If you are shopping for jewelry, particularly gemstones, certain gold and silver items, pearls, and watches, you may be able to nab a good deal besides getting the duty-free benefit. If you are looking for something specific (tanzanite earrings, for instance) and you happen to know the going prices and can assess quality yourself, you should feel very comfortable in the cruise shops. You'll be able to know if you're getting a good deal or not.

I've heard a lot of cruise anecdotes about cruise passengers who combed local ports of call seeking bargains only to find out they could have done just as well or better by sticking to the duty-free shop onboard!

When making a duty-free purchase, keep the receipts. You may be asked to show them upon returning home. A U.S. citizen may bring up to $800 of merchandise back into the country without paying duty. If you rack up more than that, you may be asked to pay a certain amount of duty or tax on the purchase. I guess the idea is that you can bring a reasonable amount of personal purchases back home from your vacation duty-free but not so much merchandise you could go into business!

Another advantage of buying duty-free on your cruise ship is convenience. You get to shop when you feel like, dressed casually, and deal with friendly, outgoing, English-speaking personnel. And the best part is that you can cart your purchases right back to your room. Many cruise ships offer guarantees on their merchandise, meaning that once you're back home you can contact the cruise line if you experience a problem with what you've purchased. This service is not likely to be as handy from foreign shops, if it is even available at all.

Airports may also have duty-free stores but only for people who will literally be traveling from a foreign country back home. The same principles apply: you may not see radical mark-downs (but then again, you often see good prices) but you will not be charged taxes.

Keep in mind that when you return to the U.S., U.S. citizens can only have $800 in total purchases (duty free or not). After that, the customs officials have the prerogative of charging duty, a tax on what you're bringing in. (Note that duty is not necessarily levied against anyone who brings in more than $800 but it may be.)

If you are traveling with your family, you may combine each family member's $800 duty-free allowance. As an example, a married couple with two children would have $3200 duty-free allowance.

Another choice for the buyer is to deposit his payment with Escrow.com and then take delivery of the vehicle. The seller ships the car after he knows the money is secure with the escrow company. The seller must provide tracking information, which is verified by Escrow.com.

The buyer has between one and 30 days to thoroughly inspect his new purchase (the period is negotiated between the two parties ahead of time). If this time expires and the escrow company has not heard from the buyer, it assumes he is happy and gives the purchase price to the seller.

The buyer may return his vehicle if he isn't happy and sometimes buyers and sellers work out partial payment agreements, the buyer being satisfied with some parts of the transaction, but not with others. If a dispute arises, it is settled by the American Arbitration Association.

Once both parties have agreed, the title transfer process begins and Escrow.com will guarantee this too, for a fee of $95. Title transfers are handled by Centerpoint Diversified Services which works in all 50 states. The fee, naturally, doesn't include any transfer costs - it is only insurance that the title will be expedited to the satisfaction of both parties.

Escrow.com also offers a service that will ship cars almost anywhere in the world and will gather an auto history report to inform sellers if their new chariot has been salvaged or stolen, suffered flood or hail damage, been in a fire or accident, has had an odometer rollback or has been used as a police car, a rental or a taxi.

Anyone considering offering used cars for sale on eBay would be well advised to thoroughly learn the services available through Escrow.com and offer those to prospective buyers. The trust factor will skyrocket and your chances of completing sales will dramatically increase.

Usually to enjoy single dating I would just suggest my favorite bar or coffee shop or somewhere nearby as a great place to date, but without really thinking how that will affect the date and how it may help things go well. I can concentrate on my dress, on my chat, on my appearance, all this is very important if you want to continue dating, but the place itself is often ignored. And yet the place can make the date so it is time to think about this one.

Okay the first thing is think about when you date, are you enjoying dating at lunchtime or after work? If you date at lunchtime then I am supposing it is close to your place of work. If it is, then what establishments are near enough to be practical and at the same time atmospheric? Clearly some cities are better at providing great places than others. For example London dating would be good here as there are many cafes and coffee bars to try. I would always recommend dating at lunchtime if possible for a first date as there is a fixed time limit and an escape route implied. You can grab a coffee for 30 minutes and you don't need to worry about looking smart as much as you may be in work wear.

If you are dating after work then maybe it will be a bar downtown or an early evening restaurant etc. A dating agency would always advise somewhere informal to begin with so that you can both relax over a drink and I agree, an expensive restaurant could lead to you going to a lot of time, money and effort for an awkward date that ends after half an hour.
Dating at a zoo is fun, particularly out of season. I don't necessarily agree with keeping wild animals in cages but as they are there and zoos are trying to keep species from extinction that it is the least we can do to try and help. But as animals show our softer side and are interesting to go see then they are the perfect backdrop for a date. There are plenty of discussion points, plenty of things to chat about which relate to past experiences and lots of walking together. There are small cafes dotted around and places to sit and talk, a matchmaking agency will say this ticks all the boxes.

Sports activities are great fun, especially if there is lots of physical involvement. Going bowling or ice skating are perfect dating activities. The great thing about bowling is that you have a challenge from the first moment, its fun and is a great place to chat as well as grab a coffee. Ice skating allows you to fall into each others arms and therefore I think it speaks for itself. The worse you are, the better the date!
